And We’re Off!

Cold wind and dark clouds hung around the Portland Head Light as a small group gathered to observe the first step of Bob’s epic unicycle journey. Most were dressed for a mild mid-May, so there was much squinting and self-hugging against the unseasonable coolness. We gathered for pictures, handshaking, and hugs – and then Bob climbed onto his unicycle and sailed for the park exit, Laura following shortly after.

Farewell, New Hampshire

This is the day that should see us safely across New Hampshire and into Vermont. It’s been a very beautiful few days, naturewise – there is no end to the lovely mountains and trees and lakes and quaint lakeside towns and cottages. The rain has very gradually slowed, even to the point of sun peeking through the clouds yesterday afternoon! Here is a shot of their Thursday morning start, below a beautiful country house.

Time to unicycle up that mountain!

Before I jump into Bob Across America news –

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the massive tornado that plowed through Joplin, Missouri last night, left a mile-wide path of destruction and killed over hundred people (more details here.) It’s horrible to hear about, but this is why Bob is unicycling across America. Your donations to Bob’s Ride for Relief – yes, that button to the right – go to the National Disaster Relief Fund to help the people of Joplin, Missouri and other victims of tornadoes, floods, and other disasters that have been more severe than usual this year.

Internet access has been a little spotty throughout northern Vermont, so I apologize for not being exactly up-to-the-minute on Bob’s ride here! Here are some highlights from the last few days.

Landmarks & Great Art

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Not to worry! Everyone’s doing fine, but spotty internet calls for Mom to learn new skills and upload these photos from Annah.

Rest Day in Oswego

Hello from Oswego, NY! We’ve enjoyed a day of “rather extreme” rest today. Showers, eating everything in sight, recharging electronics, napping, phonecalling, bickering among ourselves, duking things out, making up, and eating, and more eating have been our priorities.

From my experience so far, biking close behind Bob, the run’s been great. I didn’t expect to tackle the challenge of hilly miles with quite as much ease as I’ve felt. Not to discount Bob’s work – he’s got the more difficult job!

This is… day four or five of New York for us? There are serious amounts of open farmland and car dealerships here. We’ve had better, more meaningful conversation with the livestock along the road in this state than in any other so far.

That’s about it for me – I’ll be trying to help keep updates rolling when I can. Until next time!

Holiday on the Road

Yesterday was very warm, so we ended up taking a break during the hottest part of the day in beautiful Fair Haven, New York. The town itself was very quiet, but the grocery store and the entrance to the Fair Haven State Park buzzed with activity, people gearing up for cookouts and outdoor activities on their day off.

Honoring our country's fallen soldiers from Fair Haven.

We took our helmets off to all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and all who have passed before. Happy Memorial Day!

Getting Out the Door

I can’t think of many Muellers who count themselves as ‘morning people’. Those who have stuff to do before 10 am drink coffee. Those who don’t, sleep.

A rare sight for the Mueller siblings.

Bob’s Friday

Bob here! I haven’t had much of a chance to blog yet, what with the daily12 hours of unicycling, 3 hours of eating, 8 hours of sleep and the hour spent admiring and trying to identify the smorgasbord of beautifully arranged roadkill conveniently set out along our route by overly generous motorists. I started the day off with a fast Tim Hortons calorie fest and we quickly made our way to our starting place about 18 miles outside of Randolph, NY.

Pausing in Cleveland

Bob unicycled right into Cleveland, Ohio yesterday… ahead of schedule! To celebrate, we are taking a few days to hang out with our friends here and recharge before taking on the rest of the country. A few momentous things have happened since the last entry, the freshest in my mind being the crazy storm the kids tried to ride through yesterday. You know you’re in big trouble when the sky starts to lighten early in the morning, then gets really dark again in a couple of hours!

Look for some various website updates in the next few days as I enjoy continuous power and high-speed internet, and in the meantime, check out this highly informative news segment on Bob’s journey and aims! Bob Across America on Mountain Lake PBS.
